Stigma, Discrimination, and Health

Prejudice and bias based on race, ethnicity, gender, income, sexual orientation, neighborhood or other social condition negatively impacts an individual’s mental and physical health.

These same social structures influence our medical training and healthcare practice, leading to perpetuation of health disparities.

This image is a graph that shows how various factors affect Health Disparities. Top of image is Stigma and Discrimination with smaller text reading Acute and chronic stress. Arrows point towards a bubble labeled Individual with small text reading Mental Health and physical health, and Structural Healthcare System with small text reading access to care and quality of care. Lastly, they all point to Health Disparities and Inequities
